Optomap® Retinal Exam

A thorough retina examination is a crucial part of a comprehensive eye exam.

The retina (located at the back of your eye) is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be seen directly. By looking at the retina, our eye doctor can not only see signs of eye conditions but also those of other issues such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and stroke.

What is an Optomap® retinal exam?

The Optomap® retinal exam is a safe and effective procedure that captures a high-resolution panoramic image of the retina without dilation. This cutting-edge technology provides a more detailed view of your retina than traditional methods, enabling us to detect 40% more retinal conditions than dilation alone.

The Optomap® retinal exam is a fast, easy, and painless way to scan and image the retina for people of all ages. Nothing touches your eye at any time. During the exam, you will look into the device one eye at a time and will see a flash of light when the image of your retina has been taken. The image capture takes less than a second, and images are available immediately for review. You can even see your retina—exactly what Dr. Lambright sees—in 3-D animation.

What are the benefits of an Optomap® retinal exam?

An Optomap® retinal exam gives our doctor a more detailed view of the retina than they would be able to obtain with other methods. It allows our optometrist to detect even the smallest changes in your eye health over time. Many diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma can develop without showing any symptoms in the early stages. However, early signs of these issues can be found with a thorough retinal exam. While traditional retinal imaging methods only capture 15% of the retina, the Optomap® is the only technology that can capture 82% of the retina in one panoramic image.

How often should I get an Optomap® retinal exam?

We recommend getting an Optomap® retinal exam every time you have a comprehensive eye exam. This ensures you have a digital record of your retinal health on file so we can compare changes in your eyes over time.

Who can benefit from the Optomap® retinal exam?

Everyone can benefit from the Optomap® retinal exam, especially those with a family history of eye diseases, diabetes, or high blood pressure or those over the age of 40.
